Demonstrating the H-3’s ability to easily operate off the water, this U.S. Coast Guard HH-3F Pelican (1430, msn 61-586) picks up a hapless sailor from his burning boat. Note the fold out platform used to assist the survivor on board. While most of the Sikorsky H-3 line were considered amphibious, water operations proved problematical due to severe corrosion issues.
