138289, C/N 200-360, T-28B, Notes: The following note was received from Lieutenant Commander Mike Louy, USN (Retired) - T-28B BuNo 138289 - Tail Number 2G 251 - was assigned to VT-2 at NAS Whiting Field, Florida. It was the custom to assign Unit I (Transition, Precision, Acrobatics - TPA) instructors their own aircraft. I checked in to VT-2 in May 1968 and left in May 1971. During that time, I had almost 850 flight hours in this aircraft alone - over 1,800 accident-free hours total. Tail Number 2G 251 was flown from the North Line at North Field. It was one of only four TACAN equipped aircraft. It spent lots of time in the landing pattern, and was flown daily on practice high and low altitude simulated engine failures. Once in about 1970 while returning from the last flight of the day, I noted the cruise RPM fluctuated about 5 RPM - unusual for this particular engine. Mixture rich made no difference, so I made a maintenance write-up. The next day the aircraft was not available. Checking with maintenance control I learned that an oil sample had been sent to NARF Pensacola for analysis. Their report: CHANGE THE ENGINE because of master rod bearing deterioration and probable failure. How lucky was that? Lucky, indeed, thanks Commander Louy.

Note: Official U.S. Navy records list BuNos 150356 through 150405 and 150692 through 150716 as T-28A model Trojans. However, apparently these airframes were upgraded to T-28D specifications, and then shipped overseas via the Military Assistance Program (MAP).

The below listed BuNos are listed in official U.S. Navy records as T-28B model Trojans. Some sources do indicate that these airframes were built as T-28A model Trojans, and later converted to T-28B standards. Some NAA records do indicate that these airframes were T-28As converted to T-28Bs. Conversely, one source indicates that these airframes were never upgraded to T-28B standards. However, the USAF Inventory Report for 1972 has these aircraft, with the exception of 153653, listed as T-28D models, and assigned to the MAP.
